Ooph exams!!

Well yes!! quite right... the yearly nightmare is here.Hopefully this will be the last as far as my graduation is concerned.

I think the worst part about exams is that usually we forget most of what we learnt after we babble it all out on those lined sheets which very often decide our future. Most often than not the mere numbers that our lives get based on are allotted by people who have never seen the practicality of what is written. The numbers on those marksheet is the sole determinant of your intelligence and every little capability you have developed as an individual through your lifetime.

But then there has to be some kind of a system for an employer to make sure that his employee is capable of the job assigned to him. And so exams seemed to be the only answer. Most professionals who I meet, always tell me that the real learning lies in actually doing the job. This is where our Indian education system suffers where our brains are used merely to store information and very rarely to the application of it. Once we bridge that gap and realise the importance of practical knowledge, those numbers will be move closer to gauging the real worth of an individual. We might have to do this at the expense of may be learning a bit less but what we will learn will stay with us for life!!!

Learning which is the purpose of education turns into and is left at memorising.Once you have learnt something, it stays with you for life. But memory, on the contrary is short-lived. Learning is possible only when we listen. Listen and not just hear. The ability to imbibe what is being said not with a closed mind or with preconceived notions but with an open mind. Education is a sort of training and therefore we need to school our minds. This process will educe the best in us. An open mind promotes being aware. An alive mind has the ablity to observe which is the best teacher. Once you learn by observation, that knowledge becomes your own.

So it is vital that we are told these things when we are young so that our way of thinking is moulded this way. This is fundamental to be being a better human being and a responsible citizen, which should be the goals of our schools and education establishments. Churning out walking talking memory chips with no individuality is a complete waste of potential and lives that could have achieved greatness.
